Frequently Asked Questions
What happens to fabric waste that isn't recycled?
Most types of fabric can be recycled, but some are not reusable. Fabric that doesn’t get recycled ends up in landfills. Textiles and clothing in landfills pose a significant problem because they decompose slowly, often taking decades, especially when it comes to synthetic fabrics. Alternatively, fabric waste that isn’t recycled may be incinerated.
Cotton and natural fibers take just a few months to decompose, while synthetics like polyester can persist for hundreds of years. This underscores the importance of ensuring that whoever handles your commercial fabric waste, whether it’s you, your local council, or a private company, prioritises recycling to the fullest extent possible.
Is cotton recyclable?
Absolutely, cotton is recyclable alongside other textiles and fabrics. Recycling one tonne of cotton can conserve a whopping 765,000 liters of water. However, the production of recycled cotton is somewhat limited, as the quality may not match that of clothing and garments made from new cotton. Consequently, it is often blended with new cotton to create fresh products.
Cotton can be recycled in two primary ways:
- Pre-consumer recycled cotton: Waste cotton undergoes processing to generate new fibers.
- Post-consumer recycled cotton: Existing cotton is broken down and repurposed to form new fibers.
What should I do with old towels?
Old towels can be recycled alongside other types of textile waste and clothing since they are typically composed of similar fibers. It’s crucial to ensure that they are clean and dry to prevent any contamination. If they meet these criteria, simply place them in a textile bin, and they will undergo the same processing and recycling as other textiles.
When it comes to old paper towels, they usually belong in the general waste stream. This is because they consist of fibers that are too small to be effectively recycled. Additionally, used paper towels may be wet and contaminated, making them unsuitable for inclusion in your regular dry mixed recycling.
Can you recycle polyester?
Yes, polyester is recyclable, but the recycling process differs slightly from that of other fabrics. You can recycle polyester clothing and items by placing them in a textile or clothing recycling bin as you would with any other textiles. These items will be sorted and separated from other fabrics at the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) and subsequently recycled using one of two methods:
- Mechanical recycling: The plastics in polyester are melted down to create new yarn, though this can only be done a limited number of times as fibers lose their quality.
- Chemical recycling: This process breaks down the plastic molecules and transforms them into new yarn, which is then used to create fresh products.
